OK, for some reason you need to remove the volume and tone knobs from your Strat or other guitar with plastic knobs. In most cases you won't be able to pull them off just with your hand. DO NOT use a metal screwdriver to pry them off, as you will almost certainly leave a dent in the skirt of the knob and/or the pickguard or guitar body. Here are two options to do it safely and without damage.
The first option is to use the Guitar Knob Puller tool that we carry and sell here on Metro DC Music. It's an inexpensive tool that easily removes plastic, wood, and metal push-on knobs with no additional tools and without damaging knobs, body finishes, or pickguards. It also saves your fingers or nails from pinching or being pulled back.
To use this tool you just lift the ring to near the top of the handle and slide the knob grippers under the knob. Ensure that the grippers are securely fit under the knob. Then lower the ring until the grippers are firmly held together, and use the handle to pull the knob straight up and off the shaft of the potentiometer.
The second option is great if you don't have a puller tool or the time to get one. Using a thin cloth or rag, hold an edge of the cloth taut while sliding it beneath the knob and continue around the diameter of the knob skirt. Then bundle the fabric in your hand and pull the knob straight up and off. See this portion of a video from Fender to see the technique in action:
