The Whirlwind ISOXL is a professional quality single-channel line-level isolation transformer. It provides an easy way to isolate an audio line to help eliminate noise and hum. The ISOXL is more effective at eliminating ground hum than just lifting pin 1 by clipping or desoldering the shield connection on one end of the signal cable. It can also greatly improve the common-mode rejection characteristic of a balanced line. Balanced cables have two conductors plus a shield. Any unwanted noise that finds its way into the cable presents itself on both signal conductors in equal amounts, and with the same polarity. This is called common-mode noise. At the input device the signals are combined and one of them is reversed, changing the polarity of one of them cancels out the noise. Hence the term "rejection". Sometimes this is imperfect, in which case adding the ISOXL can improve the common-mode rejection to the point where audible noise virtually disappears. It also blocks DC voltage because ISOXL only passes the AC audio signal. This can be important if someone accidentally plugs a line level device into a mixer channel that has phantom power turned on. In addition the ISOXL works wonders to remove hum and buzz generated by lines from the mixers to the amps or speakers. Every gigging musician should keep one of these little lifesavers handy.
